Leptin and Autoimmune Diseases

چکیده
Introduction: Leptin, an anti-obesity hormone, is also a regulator of the immune response whichsends important signals regarding the metabolic status and immune system function. Thishormone/cytokine can affect the secretion of acute phase proteins such as Interleukin-1 and TNF-αand facilitate communication between nutrition and Th1 immune response so that when the foodintake reduces, plasma leptin levels decreases, leading to reduced function of the immune system.Increase in blood leptin levels in obesity makes the obese people more susceptible tocardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases and cancer. Previous researches demonstrate theimportant effects of leptin in metabolism, whereas more recent studies show that this molecule hasan important role in many other key functions of body such as haematopoiesis, thermogenesis, reproduction, angiogenesis, homeostasis and immune system. This paper aims to review the mostrecent findings regarding the role of leptin in the pathology of autoimmune disease, in particularmultiple sclerosis, psoriasis, autoimmune thyroid disease, lupus erythematosus, endometriosisand rheumatoid arthritis.

Role of leptin in autoimmune diseases.
Leptin represents a link between metabolism, nutritional status, and immune responses. Leptin is important for optimal functioning of the immune system. Leptin is a cytokine-like hormone with proinflammatory properties linked to autoimmune diseases. Moreover, there has been increasing evidence that leptin is involved in the pathogenesis of various autoimmune diseases. Leptin has been shown to e...
متن کاملRestricted leptin antagonism as a therapeutic approach to treatment of autoimmune diseases.
Leptin, the adipocyte derived hormone, has a pivotal role in regulating energy homeostasis and appetite. Beyond this essential role in bodyweight control, leptin also regulates the immune responses. Leptin has pro-inflammatory effects on T cell populations, shifting the T helper balance towards a TH1 phenotype, through induction of pro-inflammatory cytokines and stimulation of macrophage and na...

متن کاملAn Overview of Leptin and the Th1/Th2 Balance
Adipocytes produce hormones and adipokines, among others leptin, with metabolic and inflammatory responses. The role of leptin involves different subsets of the immune system. Low levels of serum leptin concentrations are associated with bacterial infections and produce susceptibility to allergic diseases and type Th2 autoimmune diseases. High levels of leptin are associated with Th1 autoimmune...
